Scene One Qin Dynasty – Meng Jiang Nu
During the tyranny of First Emperor of Qin, Meng Jiang Nu’s husband was drafted into a construction work gang destined for the Great Wall, an extreme and deadly labour that has taken many young and strong lives. For months, Meng Jiang Nu heard nothing from her husband. Wracked with worry, she sewed a quilted suit and took to the roads. Journeying northwards for months upon months, she arrived at the wall only to find that her husband had already died. Falling on her knees, she wept until her tears melted down the stone bricks of the Great Wall.
