Scene Three: Han Dynasty - Wang Zhaojun
Wang Zhaojun is one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, and an adept pipa player. She refused to bribe the royal portrait painter who then disfigured her portrait and presented it to the Emperor. Subsequently she was never able to draw the monarch's interest in her until she volunteered to be a peace envoy through her marriage to the King of Xiongnu, a barbaric kingdom in the far North, resulting in sixty years of peace for the Han Dynasty. Zhaojun was celebrated as a tragic heroine for her sacrifice to the nation. She ended her life by living in solitude far away from her hometown.
